Automation, judgement, or both.
Payroll automation is very good at the repeatable part and weak at the exception. Software processes standardized runs quickly and flags anomalies; it does not resolve a garnishment query, chase a missing timesheet or explain a deduction to an employee who is upset about it.
Offshore specialists handle exactly those cases but do not match software on raw speed. This is why the table has three columns rather than two: in practice most payroll operations of any size end up running both, with software doing the volume and people doing the judgement.
Payroll software is excellent at the repeatable part, it never gets tired, and it does not need managing. Choose Connext when the exceptions are what actually cost you time, and someone has to answer for them.
Follow an engagement from the day you sign it to the day you judge it. At each milestone the two models do something different and at the last one, the BPO wins.
